The construction of small towns is a mater of great significance of the development for society economy in our country and the development of small towns is one of the important approaches to urbanization. But, at the same time, during the course of reform and opening up, the quality of the construction for small towns is not high when small towns have a speedy development. Especially, the characteristics of small towns are disappearing by and by. From the view of cognition, the paper analyzes the composing and connotation of small towns' characteristic, the forming and vanishment of small towns'characteristic, and also the object model and main body model of small towns'characteristics. And from the theory above,the plan and design for small towns can be directed perfectly.The small town's characteristic is mainly composed of three kind of factors which are natural factor and man-made factor and cultural factor. And the connotation of small towns' characteristic which determine the small town's feature mainly includes the society, economy, culture, nature and so on.According to the experience of the development of small towns' features, its development is a system which includes two aspects of factors referring to the objective and the subjective. In the system the small town's characteristic is determined by the connotation and enriched by the planning and designing and guaranteed by the town management, and the subjective comparison and approvement on the characteristic is the hinge of its coming into being. So, based on these, the cause of the disappearing of the small town's characteristic is concluded. One side, the disappearing of zone culture which has resulted from the development of economy and technology is the reason of the disappearing of small town's features. On the other hand, the lack of understanding on the objective (small town's feature) is another reason.According to the forming and disappearing of the small town's characteristic, we should pay attention to both the objective shaping and the subjective shaping.
