Compared with other transport modes, by making use of the natural channels and man-made waterways, inland river navigation can avoid occupying land or occupy little land. It is characterized by large carrying capacity, low cost and energy-saving and environmental friendliness. Blessed by the nature, Yangtze River is the most developed and busiest navigable river with the largest scale among China's inland rivers. Compared with Rhine and Mississippi, the nature of the Yangtze River has many advantages. Combine with the waterway transporte conditionn, we believe Yangtze River's waterway capcity is very huge.Volume of the Yangtze River's cargo transportation is more than 30% of the total cargo turnover. Shipping in the Yangtze river plays a vital role in the development of the area. Research of the waterway capicity involving in the fairway, ports and shipping, goods and other basic elements like market support system, regulations, structure, management, information technology and other soft factors. This paper researchs on the potential development of the Yangtze River Channel, which is the theoretical Waterway capacity of Yangtze River. Premised on the assumption of the theoretical transportation capacity, this study analysis of the three major ingredients of waterway transportation, ports and ship and the fairway of Yangtze River in 2005 and researches on the planning of the fairway and ships in 2020. based on the previous formula of waterway capacity, this paper analysises the various factors and introduces the theory of traffic flow in traffic engineering, has a futher study of the waterway capacity. Finally, proposed the meaxsures to enhance the warterway capacity of the Yangtze River. The scope of the study : SHUIFU - LIUHEKOU...
