The scholar-bureaucrat gardens, which rose, gradually flourished, maturated and finally reach the perfection during the period of the Wei-Jin Dynasty, were derivative from the reclusion philosophy of the class of the scholar-bureaucrat, and also an embodiment of art spirit of that class. The various-formed gardens in Wei-Jin Dynasty incarnates the art philosophy of the scholar-bureaucrat class, which includes the ideas that the cosmos is enormous and universal, time and space eternally flows and extends, nature is an aesthetic perfection and life is identical in interiority. By the mean of field investigation and philology research, associated with the art theory of some related subjects, such as the Chinese ancient painting, poem and so on, the thesis analyses deeply and comprehensively the macroscopic art spirit implied in the scholar-bureaucrat gardens in Wei-Jin. It also expatiates on application of Chinese painting on the construction of gardens, and the relationship of artificiality and reality. On the background of the space of the modern cities increasingly being pokey, the macroscopic art spirit presented by the scholar-bureaucrat gardens that furthest close to nature, and meanwhile are the nature itself, can be used for reference in the construction of the modern cities.
