Study On Neighbourhood Circumstance Of Traditional Community In Shanghai

As one kind of traditional residential quarter different from modern residential quarter in Shanghai, Shikumen—literally "stone gate"—Lilongs have been publicly charactered as neighbourhood rapport. They indicate all the intrinsic social and cultural merit of pristine neighbourhood, as well as the local identity formed when old Shanghai was developed. So it's necessary to catch the culture of neighbourhood in Shanghai and construct residential condition with traditional merit through understanding the complexion of neighbourhood circumstance and objective principles. This study tried to analyze the representation and the cause of Lilong spatial form in environmental psychology and ethology, and know how great the spatial form redounds to the famous neighbourhood merits in view of physical factors, even form few gross frameworks for the interplay process.The framework based on the relations in "environment-mind-deeds" were applied to neighbourhood circumstance, and then transformed to the ones based on "residential quarter-neighbourhood cognition- neighbourhood intercourse" relations. Thus the frameworks include three fields that reflect and effect each other can give images of social nexus performing in mentality and behavior on certain spatial elements, and point our the physical characters correlated to the images. The study form the frameworks on two levels and got two system. One system includes general frameworks which can be the universal basic of any local framework. The other one includes frameworks of Shanghai Lilong which refer to the local cultural traditions. These two kinds of frameworks would work as indices for identifying neighbourhood circumstance. With a field survey in two Shanghai residential quarter, the three fields of local frameworks were embodied: the states of neighbourhood cognition and neighbourhood intercourse indicated the merits that Shikumen Lilong bring to its neighbourhood, and the state of spaces in residential quarter indicated the pertinent spatial elements. Above all else, the study screened out some elements in Shikumen Lilong that are evidently propitious to cause neighbourhood nexus and amenity, "small-scale spaces", "closely connected spaces ", " convergent pathes" etc. are theprominent elements that can help us find the true value of Space forms of Shikumen Lilong.Concluded from the comparison between a typical Shikumen Lilong and another residential quarter of similar social background, What Shikumen Lilongs really contribute to neighbourhood are utilizable nexus ready to support daily help and various, frequent intercourse giving chances to take social advantage of neighbourhood. Nevertheless, there's limitation in the space form of Lilong for neighbourhood. Compared to other residential quarters, Shikumen Lilongs are apt to neither shape strong and deep-seated emotional ties, nor give entirely optional intercourse. Given that the significance of neighbourhood in a whole community judged by public is low, the value in use of Shikumen Lilong also is limited. Hereby, this study provided the kernel of utilizing the Lilong form of residential quarter to get substantial results of neighbourhood nexus and social capital, and then pave the way for realizing and flexibly inherit the merits of neighbourhood space in Shikumen Lilong.
