Beihai is an almost one-thousand-year imperial garden, located in the center of Beijing. It combines the style of the south-Yangtze river gardens and several temples, which makes it one of the best Chinese classic gardens. The paper introduces its history and garden-making intention, analyses problems in present use and protection, discusses how to protect it well and make sustainable use of it under the direction of advanced experience on historic garden and cultural heritage protection from both china and aboard.Beihai is an important part of the Imperial City. Although the Imperial City is not in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List yet, Beihai must be highly regarded and protected as a world cultural heritage.Beihai, serving as a park in 1925, is used heavily and functions well. There are many concerns how to balance between protection and use of this historic garden for future Sustainability.
