Steel staggered truss system is a new concept in structural steel frame for high-rise buildings originated from steel frame structures. It has been applied abroad widely in recent years. But it used rarely in our country due to the lagging of research on its seismic performance, especially in experiment aspect, and no specifications can be used to guide the practice design.As a part of the study of "Development of Application Technology of Staggered Truss System" founded by Ministry of Science and Technology, a test of 1:3 scaled model of vierendeel truss under cyclic loading was carried out in this paper. The selection of this subject has great theoretical significance and practical value to promote the practical application of steel staggered truss system in the future.Based on the similar theory and relevant codes, one 1:3 scaled model of five story vierendeel staggered truss structures was designed firstly in this paper, including the design of global structure, joints, floor slab and details. Then pushover analysis was carried out by finite element program ETABS considering the material nonlinear and geometric nonlinear. As the results, the stress-strain distribution, deformation patterns in different loading stage were obtained.Based on the results of above pushover analysis, the loading scheme was put forward, together with the arrangement of displacement measurement and strain gauge. Then the test was carried out, and the phenomenon was described. At last, the seismic behavior and failure mechanism of specimen of vierendeel staggered truss structures were analyzed, including hysteretic behaviors, the deterioration of bearing capacity and rigidity, ductility, and the properties of seismic energy dissipation. The results revealed that the vierendeel staggered truss structure has high performance in ductility, ability of deformation and energy dissipation with poor rigidity. It may be useful for the further research.
