Da Xing-Shan Temple, located in the center of Xi'an city and built in 256 B.C, has a history of more than 1700 years. This ancient temple was not only the starting place and the center which led to the booming of Buddasim during the Sui Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty, but also a Patriarchal Court of Esoteric(Mizong) School. Moreover, Da Xing-shan Temple is one of the most important places where Buddhism related culture has been exchanged domestically and internationally, which enables it to play a significant role in the Chinese Buddhism history. Since the development of the religion policy in China, Da Xing-shan Temple, together with Chinese Buddhism has entered into a healthy developing period. Da Xing-shan Temple has embodied rapid progresses in many respects. Therefore, Da Xing-shan Temple has become one of the most active and influential temples in Xi'an.Based on the practical researches, the experience of building and developing temples abroad and at home, and the present situation of Da Xing-shan Temple, this paper explores the developing circumstances and surroundings for Da Xing-shan Temple. However, there are also problems existing in its development: first and foremost, the highly-commercialized neighborhood does not go with the development of the Temple. Second, unreasonable arrangements and constructions have caused the disorder of buildings in the axis of the temple. Besides, the aging teaching and researching staff, old fashioned teaching methods and the lack of talents in sermon and international communication have resulted in backwards teaching system and non-specialized lecturers. Finally, tourist products is simple and its development is not sufficient, which fainted the characteristics of Mizong and hindered the promotion of the products' value. All these problems go against the historic position and social requirements of Da Xing-shan Temple. By following the experience, reflection on the losses, comparison, analysis and study, the paper also puts forward corresponding solutions for the sustainable development of the temple: firstly, make the surroundings conform to the development, and provide the temple with enough plots for development. Second, optimize and rearrange the functional system of the temple and perfect the facilities and subordinating systems. In the third place, attach great importance to innovation and strengthen the cultivation of talents and the construction of monk faculties. Last but not the least, develop religious tourism properly, and establish sound product system which focuses on the characteristics of Mizong. The paper finally brings forth the measures and suggestions to ensure the rapid and harmonious development and design of the Da Xing-shan Temple. Furthermore, this research can be a meaningful reference to the study of developments of similar temples in Xi'an and even other parts of China.
