The seismic design code for buildings is the basis of the earthquake fortification to ensure the safety of the people's life and their properties. It is based on the economic and scientific level of the country. To work out the code which can fit the economic level, reflect the scientific level on earthquake engineering and guarantee the people's lives effectively is the aim of the government and the scientist of its country.In this paper, the author is focused on analyzing the developing tendency on present seismic design code for buildings. As China, Japan and America are the countries of strong earthquake, high seismic technological levels and rich experiences on engineering construction in the world; their seismic design codes are firstly selected as the basis to analyze the developing tendency of the present seismic design code. Because of the complication of the presented problem, this thesis only touched upon the analyses of main objects (such as seismic design of structures and foundations) and the principle design methods.Next, the development history of the seismic design codes in China, Japan and America are analyzed and reviewed. It indicates that a development and improvement process in considering seismic load—foundation—structure system interaction from the main factors: the aim of fortification, earthquake effect, foundation, structure, calculating method, as well as the seismic measures. It also indicates that present codes reflect the current new levels of seismic design, and then, on the basis of analyzing the present seismic design codes of the three selected countries in detail, the developing tendency of present seismic design codes on the fields above mentioned (the seismic fortification level and objective, earthquake effect, the site soils and structure influence on the ground motion and the seismic calculating theory) are analyzed and discussed. Finally, some problems of the further development of Chinese seismic design code for buildings are also discussed.Though the analysis is considered on the seismic design codes for buildings in China, Japan and America, we can still understand the difference among Chinese code and the other two codes. It's also helpful to comprehend the levels of the Chinese code, to found the developing direction of the seismic design field, to provide a base material for the Chinese code revising and to give a proposition of advanced design idea and methods, the correct approach and direction on the seismic research field. All those are useful to improve our seismic design code.
