In this thesis, an optimization design is discussed on the basis of a portal frame structure that was entrusted to an architectural institute by our college. The aim of the optimization design of the frame structure is the least steel amount and the lowest engineering cost on the premise of structure safety. The FEM software is used as a platform to build a finite element model of the portal frame with a parameterized design language APDL. The portal frame is analysed into BEAM3 units according to the technical specification for steel structure and the model situation with the elasticity analysis method. In addition, the production practice and material specification series are also fully considered. After optimization the portal frame is reduced obviously to a weight of 1.624 T and have a noticeable economic effect.
