The rutting is one kinds of majior failures for asphalt pavement. which behaves like a longitudinal strip trench along the running direction and will cause ridgy deformation at two sides. It is mainly because the asphalt mixture is designed irrationally or the base and surface are not compacted enough. So the mix is poor in stability that asphalt mix may cause concretion and permanent deformation due to the repetitive loading. With the rapid economic development, the number of heavy vehicles in China has been increasing dramatically in recent years, as well as axle load and tire pressure. As a result of the large volume channelized truck traffic, rutting has become a major distress in asphalt pavements.In this paper, the rutting mechanism and the factors influencing the rutting were studied further, the indexes to evaluate rutting were compared and the advantage and disadvantage of the indexes were pointed out. Based on extensive research and synthetical analysis to the rutting problem existing on highway in Jiangsu Province, different types of material and structure were used to do circular road test. The impact of base structure and material on the pavement structure was researched, the relationship of deformation depth with loading times was deduced and the rutting resistance of different pavement structures was evaluated through the circular road track test. The same surface-intermediate composite structure mixtures with the structures used in circular road track test were tested by Hamburg wheel tracking device, which showed the same rank of the rutting resistance of mixes with what was found in circular road track test. Meanwhile, how the boundary between layers influences the rutting resistance was studied. Finally, four-unit and five-parameter model and layer-strain method were used to finish the formula. And the results of circular road track test were used to validate the parameters of formula, furthermore, the rutting development rule of asphalt concrete was studied.
