High temperature stability of asphalt mixture is an important index of the performance of asphalt concrete, and the rut tests are adopted to evaluate it. But the rut test instruments and the index adopted by different countries vary. The differences and connections between the foreign instruments and tests and that of our country deserve research. This will also be meaningful for the improvement and perfection of the test indexes of our country.This paper discuss the differences between HWTD and the national rutting tests. Conclusion that analysis on the evaluation of the following three aspects: the modified effects of the high module modification, the division of the gradation type of the mixture, as well as the application of the modification to the gradation type of asphalt mixture is that the traditional rut tests only can identify the rutting resistance of the asphalt mixture with low rigidity, the Immersion Rutting test well identify that of the high-rigidity mixture, while the HWTD can identify the rut resistance of all kinds of asphalt mixture effectively; at the same time,it was testified that evaluating the water stability of the asphalt mixture with HWTD can compensate for the deficiencies of the traditional tests. Meanwhile, the physics and mechanic index as well as the digital image means are chosen to evaluate the effects of the linear knead of HWTD. Generally, compaction effort of the two molding instruments are equivalent, but the compaction effort of linear knead compacting is lowerThen the response of the two rut tests are compared in different test condition such as the thickness and shape of samples, the test temperature and the water-bath. The conclusion is that the two are consistent in the other conditions. Among all the factors, the effect of temperature on the rut results is the most notable. Because of the superiority of HWTD evaluation index, its relativity to the national index is analyzed. The result shows that the relativity of DS to the HWTD indexes is not so well, while the relativity of the index of rut depth is fine. Therefore, CS is proposed to the improved national index in rutting tests, and its relativity to the index of HWTD is well, and can well identify the rut resistance of all kinds of asphalt mixture.
