The special automatic ultrasonic flaw detector used in small diameter bar material is presented in the paper integrating the traditional ultrasonic flaw testing technology with mechanical, electric and computer technology. The inspection plan for different kinds of defects was introduced, and also the main function of mechanical system,controlling unit,ultrasonic equipment and software were also presented.This system combining vertical incidence longitudinal waves means with oblique incidence shear waves means, measured the bar material, surface, axial and horizontal defect and has gotten the good detection results.The principle of detector is that the A-Scan flaw instrument of USL32 beams the ultrasonic to detect the bar material with the method of pulse echo once. The special scanning device to fix the probe is designed. The overall plan having been used to detect the bar material is that the bar material is rotating and advancing, while the heads of the detector hole still, and using the tricycle driver. The scanning device scans the bar material and samples the echo with the A/D card on the control of computer. After scanning, the data of echo is processed and the C-Scan graph of bar material is displayed. The size and the position of the flaw can be concluded from the graph. The operator can judge the quality of the bar material and offer the basis for improvement of the quality of the excellent material.The project comes from the request of engineering .The whole detector is developed based on the request of user. The detector is easy to operate and the detecting efficiency and the rate is high.. The detector is improved gradually and its function is verified.
