Theory And Approaches Of Sustainable Development-Oriented Urban Functional Zoning

Urban planning is an important guide for city's construction and development. Functional zoning, an effective tool to deal with conflicts between different human activities and nature resource use options, is the core of an urban planning. Nowadays, some urban ecosystem and nature resources have been heavily destroyed. One of the basic reasons resulting in it is the unsuitable functional zoning, that is, urban ecosystem and nature resources are ignored during functional zoning work. However, it is difficult to improve it within current theory framework, as the goal of current urban planning work is to meet social-economic needs and so do urban functional zoning. Therefore, it is urgent to do a new research for urban functional zoning and the research must jumps out of the old framework.Accordingly, based on sustainable development theory, this thesis tries to construct a new framework for urban functional zoning. Main contents of this study include three parts--theory research, framework construction and case study of urban functional zoning.In the first part, this study illuminates the definition and characteristic of urban functional zoning. Based on this and the review of some theory of city and ecology, five primary principles of urban functional zoning are developed. Afterwards, the study forms a point about how to do the functional zoning work to meet the goal of sustainable development by applying the principles. According to the point, a three-step functional zoning framework, including the functional zoning based on ecosystem conservation priority principle, the resource-oriented functional zoning and public participation is developed.In the second part, urban planning knowledge, ecology related theories and environmental economy tools are employed to systemically construct the approaches and methods of each step of functional zoning framework.
