The need for strengthening and retrofitting existing structures or damaged ones is the one of the most important problems that structural engineers face. As a new and effective method, strengthening reinforced concrete structures with CFRP has been paid more and more attention and been widely applied. It has an extensive application future for its outstanding performances such as high strength, low weight, corrosion resistance, together with the handy operations comparing to traditional retrofitting methods. In the paper, design theory and non-linear finite element analysis of flexural reinforced concrete beam strengthened with CFRP are investigated. The main works done are as follows:At first, mechanical characteristics of CFRP are analyzed and summarized according to previous experimental data, meanwhile, failure mechanism of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with CFRP and main factors which affect strengthening effects are analyzed also. Then, through analysis of development of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with CFRP at home and abroad, a method for calculating the ultimate load capacity of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with CFRP is proposed when the effect of secondary load is considered, based on actual design criterion for concrete structure of our country. Then, the calculating method and influence factors of ultimate load capacity of strengthened beam damaged by bonded failure type are proposed and analyzed. Finally, the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with CFRP is analyzed by finite element program entitled ANSYS. Numerical simulation results in this paper is in good agreement with experiment ones. It means that the analysis theory proposed in this paper is reasonable, and it can be referred for construction design and model experiment.
