The gravity dam mainly depends on its structure weight to keep stability. Analysis of anti-slide stability is the main part in the gravity dams design, and it aims at testing the anti-slide stability of gravity dam along foundation bed plane and along soft structure plane.This paper adopts anti-slide of double inclined wedge for gravity dam as investigated subject, and makes use of rigid equilibrium limit method, limit state design method and FEM to analyze anti-slide stability.Though lots of FEA calculation, the factor that spread direction of plastic zone and the third principal stress in dam toe area trends to lower reaches is confirmed, so this trend could be used as the direction of the second slip plane in rigid equilibrium limit method.At present, the mechanical meaning of actual gravity dam design specification is ambiguous and the safety factor is on the high side according as the actual specification. So, based on the principle of rigid equilibrium limit method, the formulas are deduced as the second slip plane is slantwise, and then the limit state design method formulas are deduced again. Physical meaning of the formulas is more explicit, and it is valid to appraise stability of gravity dam.The partial coefficient FEM not only thinks over the partial coefficient, which makes FEM with the credibility meaning, but also makes stress summation method combined with limit state design method, and then the method could consider being the criterion of stability evaluation for gravity dam. Although partial coefficient FEM has lost its numerical simulation meaning, it is steady to analyze stability, so it is advisable to evaluate stability using the partial coefficient FEM.Taking the Ganyinyan dam as an example, its stress and strain were analyzed using the general FEM software ANSYS. After the principles summarization of stress and strain and the material strength process in the whole 3D FEM study, the 30th dam monolith was taken as typical dam segment for further research. By the partial 3D FEM study, it can be proved that the second slip plane is slantwise, and the direction of the second slip plane can be determined by the spread direction of the third stress and plastic zone. The stability of the 30th dam monolith was researched using overload method and material strength method.
