Water hydraulics has the advantages of environment-friendly, non-flammable, clean, safe, readily available, inexpensive, and easily disposable. It is widely recognized that water hydraulics is a frontier research area and the hots pot of hydraulics research and design. It has a wide application and development potential. Water mist used for fire suppression has the advantages of causing no pollution, having high fire extinguishing capability, minimum quantity of water requirements, low water damage and good effects. Since the signature of "Montreal Protocol", water mist fire suppression system is in fact considered an the potential substitute for the Chlorine- or bromine-based gaseous fire suppressants known as HALON, which has great affection to the ozone layer. It is obvious that ship fire is one of the most difficult fires to control. Ship fires occur frequently and there might be dangerous disasters. Life safety, property protection, cargoes on the ship, and the ship safety itself are the concerns. Loss of lives, damages to property and environmental pollution might result from the fires.Nozzle is a key component that is essential to all kinds of high-pressure water mist fire extinguishing systems. Therefore, research on nozzle's atomizing mechanisms and characteristics and its fire suppression characteristics in this dissertation has great significance for the development and application of the high-pressure water mist fire extinguishing technology. The mechanism and advantages of water mist fire extinguishing technology are analyzed. Atomizing mechanisms of liquid is discussed. After comparison of various atomizers, centrifugal machinery nozzle is selected for the spray head used in the water mist fire extinguishing systems. The inner flow field of centrifugal nozzle is theoretically analyzed. Conclusions that are useful for the design of nozzles are deduced. Lots of experiments on the atomizing characteristics of several types of nozzles are carried out. The results show that: The increase of pressure can lead...
