The fact that the per capita floor space in urban housing reached 23.7M2 at the end of 2003 in China demonstrates that the development of urban housing has transferred into the phase favoring on residence quality, instead of that of housing quantity. Real-estate agencies still unreasonably pursue the enhancement of housing quantity, and thus have been developing a huge amount of dwellings unsuitable for the comfortable residence. These factors in turn contribute to the substantial increase of the area of empty residential house. So it is necessary to research the development of comfortable urban housing in China. The thesis first reviews the modern and contemporary evolution of urban housing in China, and generalizes several rules and experience. The second chapter investigates a variety of factors influencing the inhabitation form, illustrates its contemporary phase, and predicts the prospective tendency. The third chapter focuses on some characteristics of urban housing in terms of development and supplying infrastructure. Some subsistent problems are revealed at the same time. From what has been discussed above, the last chapter gives some rudimental study for the development of comfortable urban housing in China. The first suggestion is to improve housing market and strengthen old housing market. Residents then could choose over resident location more freely, and each caste, especially those without decent payment may afford their own comfortable dwelling according to their individual financial situation. The second argument is to develop healthy housing to make residents live comfortably. Besides, low energy consumption housing can protect environment, create suitable residence, and save energy and funding. The last opinion is that treating old housing neighborhoods efficiently offers all residents pleasant opportunities to enhance housing comfortableness without moving.
