To be the one-up city in westward exploiture of China, Xi'an has been making rapid progress in city construction. Lacking of experience and not understanding the sustainable development sufficiently, however, some problems and conflications broke out during the development of the city. The unsustainable urban housing is one of the most serious problems among them.Meanwhile, the housing development and construction becomes faster and certainly will continue in all the citys of China in the future. They all face major setbacks, so-called "four lows and two highs" which could be translated as outdated building technologies, poor building design, low production output and poor living comfortability while high resources (energy, water and building materials) consumption and significant (air, water and indoor air) pollution. So the assessment and optimization of sustainable urban housing has been the corporate question for discussion.Within this context, the overall objective of the proposal is to develop an assessment system on sustainable housing in Xi'an, which is considered typical of a traditional large city in China. We starteed with reviewing and analyzing the present situation; then, we investigated the willings of the city dwellers, how sustainability can be integrating into the housing development programmes, and it will develop and demonstrate strategy for the existing housing developing model in Xi'an. The results could be helpful to other cities in China.
