The number of internal separation population in China is large now and it will be increasing. The high population ratio of internal separation people in big cities has affected the distribution of urban infrastructure and residences' daily life evidently.Based on empirical analysis, this paper researches the spatial characteristics in the internal separation population of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. By using the relative data from the 4th census in 1990 and the data from the 5th census in 2000, the research of the urban level analyzes the spatial characteristics and the evolution in the internal separation population in big cities. Based on the empirical investigates of Shanghai community in 2005 and in 2006, the research of the community level analyzes the change of internal separation population after 2000 and the characteristics of internal separation population, and discusses the causes of internal separation. In the last part, the paper also analyzes the relationship between spatial characteristics in internal separation population and urban planning and presents some planning solutions from two views: leading the population distribution strategy and optimizing population distribution.
