Seaport Area Landscape Planning And Design

Numerous outstanding port cities in the world are not only important nodes and hinges of the global logistics chains, but also national or regional financial centers, logistics centers, and famous scenic areas for tourism as well. Agglomeration effect and functional variety constitute the core competence of the port cities.During the globalization, factors of production, economic resources and division of labor are transformed dramatically at different levels and clustered in the areas with characters and characteristics. Meanwhile, cities need creating, maintaining and strengthening their own characters and characteristics, carrying out at specific positions in specific areas. Port districts at the seaside are such areas with characters and characteristics. The essence of port development trend is integrity of port-and-city and multiplication of functions. The construction of modern ports would lay stress on the wharf district and pay as much attention to the scenery and landscape of the whole port district. Therefore, the constructions of the port landscape meet the needs for beautiful scenic environments of the port city, furthermore, for sustainable development of the port and promoting competence of the city.However, many problems exist in the constructions of port landscapes in China; lack of planning for port landscape, vacancy of the principal parts for construction and regulation, shortcoming of the related laws and regulations, and the worst being that the importance and urgency of the issue not acknowledged. In this paper, an attempt was made to propose an idea of multi-purpose and compound planning for modern seaside port district landscapes, suggesting that the master plan for the port landscape is not separable from the urban master plan of the city with the uniform designing conception, meaning that all the special landscape planning be conducted and directed by the master plan, as composed and carried out simultaneously with the detailed landscape planning and design.The author of this paper applied comprehensively basic theories, such as urban planning, port planning, landscape ecology, behavioral psychology, science of human settlement, the architecture aesthetics etc., to the multidimensional analysis and case study of the landscapes in the famous port cities of the world, concluding in the third chapter with the six principles and six factors of exploiting and building of modern seaside port districts. In addition, the paper suggested that landscape planning must be combined with measures of implementation, comprehensive administration and improved legal regulation. Effective control over the forming mechanism of the urban landscape is the only way to create harmonious seaport city landscape.
