As a new practical onboard electronic device, the vehicle traveling data recorder gets more and more attention in the background of traffic grandness and complexity. The function of shooting and recording not only saves the important information for drivers, but offers sufficient evidence and convenience for accident handling. Based on recording and combining technologies like GPS and mobile communication, this design analyses the system functions and researches a feasible solution.The paper discusses the application background and system requirement, also defines the design tasks. Than it analyses the system function and introduces every module. The ARM9 processor is applied as the kernel of the hardware flat; And ARMLinux is chosen as the embedded operating system. Also the design includes programming skills like multithread, V4L and Minigui. At last the paper detailedly explains the course of establishing the developing flat and the flow of system design, as well as the debugging method.The design realizes the basic functional requirement. It can record the vehicle status, display and save the position information, and communicate through short message when necessary. Also it offers the configuration operation and the convenient interface. The function can be extended and enriched according to the demand.
