In the recent years, as the rapid develpopemt of economy, traffic accident has a trend of increase, expecially in the long-distance transportation which brings sereve losses to our country. Therefore "the announcement about strengthening the management of passenger transport" was issued by the ministry of communications, ministry of public security and the state administration of work safety in the end of 2001. In the announcement it is decided that the long-disttance passenger car should install the vehicle traveling data recorder gradually. And the national standard "Vehicle Traveling Data Recorder" (GB/T19056-2003) was issued by General Administration of Quality, Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in April 2003, and has been actualized since Sep 2003.The vehicle traveling data recorder defined by the standard is a kind of digital electronic equipment which can record and memorize the velocity, real time, traveling distance and some other messages related to the vehicle, and then can export the data through interface. Since the recorder can memorize the messages about the vehicle and the driver's operatipons, it will play an important role in accident analysis and the management of company. From this point of view the vehicle traveling data recorder is the vehicle's black box.At present, the using of vehile traveling data recorder is in its beginning. There are still many problems that go against the installation of the recorder and its management, within which the high price is the primary, which will dramaticly increase the cost of company. And thus to develop a kind of low cost vehicle traveling data recorder is very significant.Given the situation of the recorder's adoption nowadays, a kind of vehicle traveling data recorder according with GB/T19056-2003 is introduced in this paper. The designed recorder is based on microcontroller Atmegal6L and the RAMTRON memorizer, and is mainly composed of microcontroller, LCD display, key-operation circuit, data memorizer, real time clock, data transmit interface with PC, vehicle and engine signal input circuit and printer. Because of the features of AVR MCU and RAMTRON memorizer, together with the utilizing of serial communication and simulated serial communication technique, the design can be very compact and the cost is low also. The simulated experiment has indicated that the design can meet the demands of GB/T19056-2003 in data recording.
