According to the typical meteorological characteristics of the most contamination flashover problems of composite insulators, a cold fog testing system was developed, which includes the function to regulate the temperature of environmental testing chamber, fog-generating speed and the temperature of fog in a large range. The temperature of environmental testing chamber can be controlled from -20 to 40℃; The fog-generating speed can be changed from 0.025 to 0.375 kg/(h·m3);The temperature of fog can be changed from 0 to 40℃. Based on the testing system, the test of contamination flashover characteristics of composite insulators has been carried out using equivalent-fog and clean fog test method. Based on the experimental results, the temperature have little influence on the flashover voltage of the contaminated composite insulators without hydrophobicity. The contamination flashover probability of the composite insulator samples whose hydrophobicity have already well migrated could be increased under the conditions with low temperature plus long wetting time, moreover, the amount and the change gradient of the cumulate pulse number of the flashed-over samples are much higher than those of the withstood samples. The cumulate discharge quantity has also the same tendency. However, further work should be taken to study the quantitative relations among these parameters.
