With the application of computer and microelectronic technique in measuring and the demand of waveform signal in many fields, the measurement field focuses on the Arbitrary Waveform Generator(AWG). Currently Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) is adopted in order to fulfill AWG in foreign and domestic companies. The DDS technique adopts full-digital synthesis methods. The generated signals have advantage of high frequency resolutions, fast frequency switching, continuous phase while frequency switching, low noise phase and being able to generate arbitrary waveforms. USB is a new type technique in PC field, as the universal interface, USB has the advantage of high speed, plug-play, stronge correction ability, auto detection function.The paper studies the AWG based on USB, which analyses AWG design technique and USB design technique in detail. The paper gives the AWG design principle and realization method which uses DDS and USB technique.First the paper introduces AWG development history, second it presents USB communication protocol and DDS, last the paper gives the AWG hardware and software design method, which uses FPGA to realize DDS function, analyzes analog channels design, especially in filter and amplitude control ways, also constructs the USB driver and AWG firmware program.Through the way advanced by the paper, we can get the high frequency arbitrary waveform using low-speed and cheap devices.
