Current reverse engineering approach is an effective way for technology progress of developing countries. Based on analysis of existing reverse engineering technologies, which mostly focus on 3D model reconstruction and rapid prototyping technology and do little research on product recovery, new concept of product reverse engineering and its theoretical framework is proposed in this paper to extend it to whole product structure and dynamic design thinking process.The aim of product reverse is to get and absorb the design methodology and key technology of the product. This paper begins with the design process model, then the growth design theory based on product functional structure Decomposition and Reconstitution Principle and Generalized Positioning Principle is introduced, and a product reverse system supporting inventive design on this foundation is developed.Then we have realized the expression of the functional face using the Object Oriented technology, also the expression of the functional part, so that we have built up the product assembly model. Using ACIS, an advanced 3D modeling kernel, in this paper a product structure model based on functional face is built and a product reverse engineering system with many interfaces of ACIS is developed. The growth design process is retrospect, the product is decomposed to a functional prototype made up of function units, then the recovery of the requirement prototype by the coupling between the function units is achieved, and innovative design of the product structure scheme is supported, so that a practical design technique or approach from existing product to innovative product is provided.Finally, the functions, module setting, technologies and running environment of system are expatiated. With an example of piston fixture, the recovery process of the product prototype and the synchronized tolerance design afterward is illustrated in details. The correctness and rationality of the theory research and implementation of technology is validated.
