The front space of city temple, which is a kind of space located near city temple, grew and expanded from temple fair happened near temples in the ancient time. It is a comprehensive district about religion, business, tourist, entertainment and recreation. The open space in front of the city Temple, which is a particular city open space stimulated by city temple, is the outside space of front building of the temple, and it is an open space that contains culture of temples, culture of custom, culture of tourist and modern business.The open space form in front of city temple, which is composed by both the "material form" and the "non- material culture", is influenced by many reasons such as the weather, geography, resources, ecosystem of the nature and the region culture, religion and faith, value, politics and the technique condition of the economy and so on.Because the space of the street and square is the most important and extensively space form in front of the city temple, this paper will research and analysis on the composition, space comparison dimensions and the furniture of street and square exhaustively. It will also analysis on the characteristics of the space structure, space sequence, space layer and the "moving" or "quiet" space about the street and square that link with the whole front space of city temple.This paper will study on the present condition and development trend of the front space of contemporary city temple in our country by analyzing some representative examples such as the City Temple of Shanghai, Confucian Temple of Nanjing, the City Temple of Xian and the Da Ci'en Temple of Xian, so that to supply some historical and theoretic reference to other cities of our country.
