AS a new type of vessels, the container vessel is different from normal vessels on the structural strength and deformation, because of its structural particularity. To acquire precise results of the deformation and stress, the method of the entire ship hull FE analysis must be used.As an example, calculation of the 8500TEU container vessel is introduced in this article. At first, an entire ship FE model and a mass model are formed by the finite element method of the entire ship. Then according to the thought of CSA-2 recommended by DNV, the long-term prediction of wave induced motion and loading is performed by the 3D radiation-diffraction hydrodynamic program, and based on which a group of design waves are defined. At last, the stress and deformation in each design wave based on the FE model of entire ship hull are calculated. The detailed deformation and stress in the main structural members of ship hull are obtained. The procedure and method of FE analysis of the entire ship hull are expounded in detail, including forming the FE model and the mass model, the properties and analysis of the wave induced loads, the method of defining the design waves, the method of FE calculation for the entire ship, and so on. The analysis method and the results of FEM analysis introduced in this article are valuable for the design and strength analysis of the similar container vessels.DNV's SESAM program is applied for the structural analysis in this article.
