With mass concrete structures being widely used in engineer practice, their thermal stress problem continues to increasingly attract our attention. Simulation method is a useful way to solve this problem. Presently, nearly all the important mass concrete structures were designed by the aid of simulation method, such as Xiaowan, Longtan, Xiluodu, Shapai,Three gorges and other famous projects. Its important practical significance has made it the popular topic of present scientific researches.However currently, the simulation analysis of mass concrete structures for the process incorporating multi factors still faces many difficulties, which introudced a lot of challenging researches. Some research works have been done as follows:(1) Analyzing the principle of thermal stress and the mechanism of cracks about mass concrete,then the paper explains the harm behavior of cracks and common measures for controlling temperature and preventing cracks.(2) Because of the complex in structure of the intake tower of Yanshan reservoir and the difficulties of modeling complicated models in ANSYS,this paper discusses the method of three-dimensional modeling in three-dimensional mechanism design software SolidWorks and solves the problem of the interface between SolidWorks and ANSYS code. As a result ,it provides the foundation of analysis in ANSYS.(3) Using RT-1 thermometers, the paper monitors the real-time temperature, which provides foundation of understanding the variations of hydration heat and temperature.(4) Taking the intake tower of Yanshan reservoir for example, the paper analyses the temperature field and thermal stress during its construction stage and storage stage by ANSYS and summarizes variations of temperature field and thermal stress ,which provides guidances for thermal cracks control.
