Concentrated on the questions in heightening of dams, and focused on the practice of heightening of Danjiangkou dam, questions in heightening of concrete gravity dams were systematically studied such as connection of new and old concrete, temperature field, and thermal creep stress field by using of large F.E.M software ANSYS in theory and practice. The main contents of this topic are as folio wings:1. Based on the information of heightening of dams all over the world, status of heightening of dams throughout the world were initially stated. What is more, the reasons and common forms of heightening of dams, especially of gravity dams all over the world are summarized, and ubiquitous questions in heightening of concrete gravity dams were discussed such as connection of new and old concrete , thermal creep stress in this article.2. It have been proved in theory and engineering practice that heightening of dams will affect structure stress in the old dam to biggish extend. In this article, considering the effect of loading history, by making use of the function of killing and activating elements in ANSYS, status of construction by stages and simple construction of Danjiangkou dam were truly simulated, and the effect on dam stress by the two different ways was studied.3. General measures of interface between new and old concrete throughout the world were studied. Aiming at the fact of heightening of Danjiangkou dam, and taking curving key grooves on the downstream face as primary types and horizontal construction joints as secondary ones, the effect on dam stress by different width of joints on the interface between new and old concrete and different modulus of elasticity of new and old concrete was studied in virtue of powerful contact function of ANSYS.4. General F.E.M theory of temperature field and thermal creep stress field of massive concrete, together with the theory of thermal stress analysis in ANSYS were expounded. And the calculation of temperature field and creep stress in ANSYS was studied, then the methods were improved on and were used in the study on heightening of Danjiangkou dam.
