Measurement Technology And The Gun Revolution In The 18th And 19th Centuries

The 18th and 19th centuries are a key period when Weihgts and Measures in Ancient Times stepped into the measurement technology, and also a period when the military technology and crafts made the most rapid development. Weapon technology as the key of military technology has a complex relationship with measurement technology.This thesis, based on sufficient historical materials of technology, analyzes the gun revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries from the three perspectives: measurement tools, measurement criteria and measurement management. Gun's technology renovation, manufacturing, and professionalization are analyzed respectively from the angles of measurement tools, measurement criteria, and the measurement management. A conclusion is drawn that measurement tools are the material basis of military technology; measurement criteria leads its new concept; and the measurement management guarantees the professionalization of military industry. From this, it can be drawn that measurement technology expands through technological field to military and social fields, and that measurement technology and military technology has an interacting development. Based on the conclusion,this thesis analyzes the demand of measurement technology in modern warfare conditions,and proposes corresponding solutions on the status of the PLA.
