Historic district conservation and renewal is one of the important part of the conservation of the cultural heritage of mankind, which is paid more attention in the process of accelerated urbanization, and has important significant and practical value.XiaoYushan historic district is one of eight remaining modern residential areas in Qingdao old town. Under the control of the relevant policies, XiaoYushan historic district maintains the better size of modern resident historic district with special layout and building styles. However, in recent years, the basic infrastructure is old and buildings are destroyed with the large increase of addition and extension in the historic district. The survival of historic district is facing serious challenges. The paper is based on the related theories and research, which learns the experience and lessons, through analyzing the experience and measures of abroad.Then the paper summarizes the main principles and models of the conservation and renewal in the modern residential historic district based on sustainable theories and organic renewal theories.Through detailed research and analysis, in the deep understanding of the history,culture, building styles, living condition features and the local residents wishes of Xiaoyushan historic district, the paper summed up the values and existing problems of XiaoYushan historic district, as the realistic base.The paper, in the basis of the condition of XiaoYushan historic district, tried to apply"harmonious theories"in the conservation and renewal of historic district, summarized the sorts, guiding ideologies ,and contents of the conservation and renewal of XiaoYushan historic district , discussed models, related policies and problems during the process of the conservation and renewal of historic district.
