Along with the rapid scientific and technological development, the mechanical equipment turns towards large scale, high speed, high strength, automated and good performance, but it also carries a crises: Once a mechanical equipment breaks down, the damage will be very serious. The gear is a key component which transmits the movement and the power in the mechanical equipment. Its performance influences the safely operating of the mechanical equipment, therefore, there is important practical significance to condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of the gear.In this paper, a fault testing system of the gear is developed by the form of virtual instrument. The development of virtual instrument is summarized. Academic situation of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of the gear are presented. The commonly-used signal processing method in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis based on vibration diagnosis method, the time-domain and freqency-domain characteristics of typical gear faults are analyzed. The composition and the development platform of the software of the virtual instrument—LabVIEW is introduced compendiously. According to the requirement of condition monitoring of the gear, the hardware system of condition monitoring of the gear is designd and achieved, including sensor, signal processing circuit and data acquisition card. Software system based on virtual instrument is completed. The design of various functional modules including the specific characteristic frequency calculation module, data acquisition module, signal preprocessing module, the time-domain analysis module, the frequency-domain analysis module and document management module is accomplished. In this foundation, these modules in the host vi diagram procedure according to certain logical order are combined. A complete system is designed for fault testing of the gear.Compared with traditional instrument ,the system characterizes high speed, high precision, low cost and friendly interface, simple operation, good scalability and conveniently developing. Furthermore, it fully embodies advantages that the words"The Software is the Instrument"bears.A simulating test has proved that the system has attained it's desired design requirement .
