The research of vehicle-carrying GPS tracking system, also known as AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), can date back to the 1970s. At first, it aimed to solve the increasingly serious traffic problems caused by urbanization. Nowadays, vehicle-carrying GPS tracking system combines the technology of GPS, wireless communication and GIS. It not only plays a very important role in Intelligent Traffic System, but also provides many other useful services like anti-thief and anti-robbery alarm service, emergency medical service and so on. But most of the traditional vehicle-carrying GPS tracking systems still use the GSM-SMS (Short Message Service) as the way to transfer information. Experiments [1] have indicated that the time delay is 6 seconds at least when service is delivered by GSM-SMS。It cannot satisfy the needs for high real-time performance under some circumstances. So it is the trend to adopt GPRS in place of GSM as the communication media. With the speed of up to 171.2kbps, it is possible to transfer position data on a regular basis of less than 1 second.Through the study of GPS technology, GPRS communication protocol, ARM embedded system, and uClinux operating system, this paper has proposed a solution for the vehicle-carrying GPS tracking system based on GPRS wireless communication. This system uses ARM embedded hardware platform and uClinux embedded operating system which provides plentiful network support resources to help implement the whole TCP/IP stack from hardware driver level to application level. uClinux operating system brings much convenience to the application of GPRS in this system. The design will be elaborated on in the following chapters.Technology of GPS, GIS, GPRS was used in this design, which has the following features: more functions available, better precision, wider coverage which enables us to track vehicles anywhere on the earth and ensures that the needs of all GPS users on the net can be fully satisfied; higher speed to locate which firmly ensures corporations to increase their response speed during their services going on, to reduce the proportion of empty-driving and to reduce the cost of operation, and so the needs of customers can be better satisfied; GPRS was used for information transmission which results in better information safety, better function for roaming, better credibility of mobile data services, etc; based on internet, the greatest platform on the web for the public, which is more open and has a larger extent of resource communion. Therefore on the one hand this platform can reduce the cost, on the other it implementes that information can be transmitted and shared without place limitation. Meanwhile you can ensure that information is accessed safely by setting different popedoms.
