Changing Scenery

Functioning as living rooms of the city, from recreation piazzas at residency area, downtown to one in front of administration building of government, more and more piazzas appear. Yet from this trend many problems have been emerging gradually such as unwise site selecting, oversize scale, lacking of cultural meaning etc. As an imported cultural phenomenon, piazza need more time before integrating perfectly with local Chinese tradition. In contrast with many researchers who always take the technical side of view such as the space construct, view analysis etc. the author studies piazza from time side which include the working procedure, change in season and each period of the day, psychology and offers some constructive suggestions for current piazza design.The thesis contains there main lines. The first one is chronological which consist of aware of existed problems and analyzing each period of process to find the practical solution. The second one is parallel which analyzing the environment of piazza from different period of a day, each season and weather in order to evade the negative effect and enjoy the benefits of nature to form the feature of piazza.Besides above two obvious lines, there exists another obscure one. A relative time concept is proposed which based on current research in psychology. By paying attention to the mental side needs and subconscious we can make a distinctive piazza environment which can call up one's psychological identity.
