Upgrading of one indigenous aeroplane to increase the capacity and to make brush- less possible of its starter and generator system, research on a novel machine is required. Doubly Salient Electro-Magnetic Motor (DSEM) is a relatively new type of DC brushless machine, which offers an excellent balance among cost, reliability, high-speed capability, and power density. DSEM has a good application in the starter and generator system.The structure,and working principle and mathematic model of DSEM are firstly explained in this thesis. Based on finite element analysis method and MATLAB, static characteristics of different rotor structures of DSEM are analysed .For decreasing bulk, weight and simplifying control circuit of the system, this article has made integral design for main power converter, excitation power circuit. This thesis introduces in details the software and hardware design of the starter control system, the system realizes automatic angle advanced control during the starting process. Then, this paper designs a novel automatic voltage regulator of the generating system to the characteristic of low voltage and large current in the generating system. The frequency-domain model of the voltage regulation system is established. Simulation on the model is done.Finally, the starter and generator system is experimented in details, for the rationality of starting control and the static and dynamic capability of generating system. Through hot start experiment on certain aeroengine, to prove the performan- ces of the system in the main have met the requirement.
