Parametric design is a modern approach widely used in the CAD industry and has become the mainstream of mechanical design, for it conform well to the modern conception design and the concurrent design. Body is an important assembly of a passenger car, which bears various complex loads during driving. The design of the body is always the key point and needs a long development cycle in the traditional designing process of a new car. To promote the flexibility of design and analysis, it is the necessity and trend of the utilization of parametric design in the automotive industry. However, the research of this respect is in the elementary phase.This paper deals with advanced parametric design approach which realized in the process of modeling and assembly of body skeleton of passenger cars. A parameterized model for the body skeleton is created on the basis of prototypes in terms of the common structural features of passenger cars and practical demands. In particular, technical contributions are enumerated as follows:? The original data were analyzed and coordinated, and the design proposal was formulated.? The main parameters and subordinate parameters were confirmed in the process of parametrically modeling of the components.? The components were assembled into the whole body skeleton model. Constrains, limits and relations of the dimensions had been applied to the model so as to make it a digital and intelligent one. Effective data and relations management was realized.? The parameter value input window was built through the secondary development tool Pro/Program.? The certain testing for the parametric model is necessary, and the approach of parametric model testing was proposed.? The experience and attention proceeding in the process of the parametrically modeling was presented.There are some significant distinctions between conventional 3D solid modeling - a concrete graphical editing activity, and parameterized programmed modeling - an abstract algorithm-construction activity. The advantage of CAD technology has been exerted sufficiently in parametric design. The realization of this parametric model lays a foundation for the sequential processes of FEM analysis, sensitivity analysis, structural optimization and the product data management, and consequently, it will improve efficiency and reliability for the body structural design and will promote serial production of passenger cars.
