Against background of globalization, traditional Chinese residential mode has been more and more replaced by the Western concepts, such as alternatives of residential modes and changes of residential concepts. Confronted with increasing homogeneous phenomenon in real estate market, and destroy of traditional architecture culture in the wave of urban construction, local architects are exploring residence with humanism so as to adapt to contemporary living style. Courtyard residence is a residential style of long history, adopted by people of Han, Hui, and Man nationalities, which can be said as mainstream of traditional Chinese residence. Traditional living habits, aesthetic value and characters of residence take some effects on extension and finalizing of contemporary housing patterns. From simple quotation of symbols at the beginning, to later reflection of key value of traditional residence, contemporary housing values inheritance and expression of "space" in traditional courtyard residence, which stresses the deep-seated connotation of culture and inside information of history in architecture. Nowadays, the real estate industry has been blown up a "China Wind", and many constructions are trying to shape a pattern with "traditional artistic conception" and "Chinese sense". With a starting point of the constructing of "Chinese sense" in contemporary housing, the paper studies "space" of traditional residence and analyses its influence on contemporary housing, the inspiration and applicability. As well, the paper concludes specific design methods from analyzing the feasibility of inheriting courtyard in traditional residence with case-study, so as to make for future reference of housing development.
