The Jinghang canal has a history of over thousands of years. It has a length of over thousands of miles and combines a lot of rivers and goes through six provinces in China. It is the only transportation artery of the inland southern part of China in the ancient time.The Jinghang canal combines Xuzhou, Suqian, Huaian, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, changzhou, Wuxi, and Suzhou, the six representative cities in Jiangsu Province. Therefore, Jiangsu has played an important role in the protection of the canal. At the same time, the canal also has a significant effect of the environvents of the cities that it goes through.If you want to create an excellent symbolic sight of canal cities, you will have to comprehend the problems that it faces when designing.Such as the loss of city specialty, ignorance of traditional culture and imbalance of preservation, protection and development as well as the blindness when realizing the specialty of city. The symbolic sight is a part of the city and participate in the overall image of the whole city. Because the nature of the canal can form its specialty when shaping the city spirit, it can enhance the distinction of the city.The dissertation commences from the background and the real situation of the canal, then analyses the experience and methods of both at home and abroad. Then it illustrates the symbolic sights and special image and concept of the city. It also demonstrate the nature and man-made factors and the principals of how to create active and typical symbolic sights. Ultimately uses real cases to discusss how to design the sights by the canal and raises new suggestions for design.Chapter one: Combined with the background and reality of the canal to demonstrate the meaning and object of this dissertation and raises the general ideas.Chapter two: Define symbolic sights of river city and summarize the relation between canal and city and also city sights, and finally analyze and summarize the factors of river city.Chapter three: Demostrate the components of the river city's symbolic sights and discuss how to establish it on the basis of analysis of culture and tradition of these river cities.Chapter four: introduce the establishment and design and procedure of the symbolic sights taking the canal's Suzhou part as an example.And at the same time attempts to raise some tentative suggestions to help the later part of the project.Conclusion and discussion: summarize the researches on the symbolic sights of the cities along the canal and raise new suggestions for designing the city symbolic sights on a macro level.
