Canal cities thrive on transportation and have unique waterway resources and geographical advantages.During the Ming(1368-1644)and Qing(1636-1912)dynasties,the canal cities in Shandong Province promoted the development of the city by water transportation, got rid of its original closure and backwardness, opened a prosperous chapter and laid an important position. The Eight Sights Culture,as a concentrated expression of the characteristics of the regional human settlements,is an important carrier of local famous mountains and rivers, scenic features, and distinctive culture. It is a cultural resonance generated by the continuous integration and evolution of the water environment and living environment during the development of canal cities. The approval of anchoring the Eight Scenic Spots,as a cultural landmark of the city,is accompanied by canal culture, including the memory of canal culture and becoming an internal connection between different regions. From the perspective of landscape architecture, this study explores the Eight Sights Culture of the canal cities in Shandong Province during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and systematically analyzes the eight sights of the canal cities by following the path of “landscape element extraction-aesthetic concept analysis-landscape law combing-representation analysis-functional interpretation”.Firstly, through a systematic review of the local chronicles of the canal cities during the Ming and Qing dynasties, combing with on-site research on numerous cities along the canal, and based on national policies for the division of the core area of the canal in Shandong, nine canal cities are selected for study, clarifying the landscape elements such as mountains and rivers in the canal cities.Secondly, based on estimated literature records, the eight scenic spots of the Ming and Qing dynasties in nine canal cities are excavated, and representative eight scenic spots are selected for ontology cognition, and the landscape elements are analyzed.Combined with iconology, the landscape image space is systematically classified. From the eight scenic spot images, the creation elements and landscape organization are analyzed, and the aesthetic orientation of the landscape collection is systematically analyzed. Then,by summarizing the overall context of the eight scenic spots in the canal city, from multiple aspects such as natural attributes, cultural intentions, and landscape elements, the four landscape formation laws(dynamic and static scenes are interrelated, virtual and real scenes tend to be realistic, nature and humanity are harmoniously combined, and layout and ranking echo in many ways)and six characterization characteristics(refined scenery names, guiding viewing;rich scenery and overall diversity;emulate those better than oneself, respect those with virtue and employ those with ability;North-South differences, different landscapes;Water transport prospers and the economy rises;Hydrology highlights and cultural coupling)of the eight scenic spots in the canal city are combed out,so as to extract six functional attributes of the eight scenic spots in canal cities of Shandong: summarizing the ecological background of the canal basin, shaping the overall image of the urban agglomeration, highlighting the local cultural characteristics, condensing the wisdom of ecological practice, influencing the character of local residents and inheriting the local context. Finally, based on the ancient natural ecological orientation, the connotation of canal culture and the level of humanistic thought, and the development status and contemporary needs of the canal city,as well as the integration of ancient and modern, this thesis puts forward the contemporary inheritance suggestions concerning the “eight scenic spots” of Shandong Canal City from four aspects: “undertaking-coordinating the urban pattern, inheriting diversified development”,“translating-activating the landscape content, subliming the urban image”,“innovating-expanding the network channels, simulating the digital spiritual environment” and “rebuilding-respecting the context and incubating the emerging landscape”,providing a reference for the inheritance of the traditional style of “water-city-scenery” in Shandong Canal City, the shaping of human settlements and the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Park.
