After the founding of the People's Republic of china, our country had used a lot of manpower and material in urban housing development for more than fifty years. When the basic need of living has been satisfied, demands for higher standards of urban housing, such as large residential area, perfect building type etc., would eventually emerge in a gradual progress. Especially, a series of reforms have been taken placed in society, economy and science field in Chongqing, which profoundly affect residents living demands. So it is necessary to take some innovations in urban housing to adapt to current situation. The apartments built in 1980's constitute a very high percentage in the total amount of housing in Chongqing at present. Although the structure of the apartments is still in good condition, their layouts, utilities, and technical systems could not meet present demands of residents. In the context of the emergence of this type of housing, as well as pertinent theory and practice home and abroad, on the basis of in-depth on-site investigation and extensive research, this dissertation analyzes and concludes the contradiction between the residential buildings built in 20-30 years ago in Chongqing city, and their adaptability of modern living style. According to these contradiction and restrictive factors in reality, the principles and goals of the renovation are set. In addition, renovation schemes are proposed aiming at different housing typologies. The dissertation, based on large quantities of field investigation and research, focuses on practicability and feasibility of renovation work, contributes a significant research to the renovation of middle-rise apartments built in 1980's in Chongqing, and the future correlative research as well. Also, from the economic point of view, old apartments have more renewal value and usually locate at better spots in urban space than the newly-built housing. Through improvement at low cost, the potential economic value would appear. Thus it is a means to make sophisticated housing progress. From another point of view, the kind of old housing has already generated strong social links to family, colleague, neighborhood, and friends and so on. Under long-term communication and coordination, a mature and steady community atmosphere has been created. Therefore, the research to the old built housing is sufficiently significant in theory and practice.
