Wireless communication technology, especially wireless Internet communication technology, represents the direction where the IT industry will develop. Besides, the field of its application is experiencing rapid extension. Among others, the wireless Internet connection service provided by GPRS has mingled wireless communication and internet together and thus engendered a brand new field, namely, mobile internet. Intelligent vehicle terminal, one of the important applications of such internet, is the combination of embedded technology, ARM CPU, GPS, GIS and wireless internet communication technology. Moreover, this terminal, equipped with the functions of orientation, time transmission, inspection, navigation and the alike, has shown its wide applications in traffic transportation. Therefore, the design and research of intelligent vehicle terminal based on Linux are important meaning for ITS. This paper fully illustrates the design of the embedded hardware and software of vehicle terminal.1. The author summarizes the current situation of the design and application of the vehicle terminal, analyzes its drawbacks and outlines the whole design plan of the software and hardware of the intelligent vehicle terminal. In addition, after researching the processor and the main function module, the author designs out the principle picture of its peripheral circuit.2. The author exerts great effort on the research of Linux kernel and the file system, and analyzes the characteristics of the function of intelligent vehicle terminal. On this basis, the author equips and compiles the Linux kernel that is suitable for such terminal, and establishes the root file system as well.3. The author examines the features of the embedded GIS and several graph interactive technology of the Linux system. The author puts forward the plan to establish GIS based on the platform of embedded Linux, illustrates the feasibility of such plan and meanwhile realizes the intelligent terminal embedded GIS (mGIS) on the platform of embedded Linux.4. Given the characteristic of PPP protocol of GPRS, i.e. the wireless internet connection, the author realizes PPP protocol on the embedded Linux system, which endows the intelligent terminal with the functions of wireless internet connection and transfer of a large amount of data, and at the same time realizes several functions such as DNS, auto-dialing and so on.
