Chinese traditional village is a valuable heritage in the treasurs of worldarchitectural art. Under the influence of Chinese traditional philosophy, it advocatesdesigning and construting with different climates and national habits and customs, suiting to local conditions and using local materials. As the region charateristic of thevillages, if simply applying the socio-cultural or architectural techniques to theresearch, it will inevitably fall into dilemma and fail to solve the opposite requirementsproperly. This research is based on the critical regionalism as a guiding ideologytheory, which inheritance and development of architectural techniques and cultures.Take Shanggantang in Yongzhou as a case, quantitative and qualitative methods areapplied into the research, which included field investigations, measurements, tests andcomputer simulations. This thesis is conducted in the following 3 aspects:First of all, compared with the traditional ideal location model, the location of theShanggantang village is expounded from the socio-cultural view point. Base on thegeographical and climatic characteristics, the reasons that caused the differencesbetween the traditional ideal location and the local location are analyzed. So theadaptive responses to the environment are summarized.Secondly, the characteristics of Shanggantang village's arrangement are analyzedfrom two aspects, including socio-cultural and technical factors. Meanwhile, theexperiences of the village's arrangement are analyzed and quantitatively concluded bysoftware simulations and physical model calculations. Finally, the village's residential houses are sorted out, the characteristics andstyles in southern Hunan are discribed, the building technologies are anatomized inthree aspects: solar radiation, indoor lighting, vertilation, which are adapted to thegeographical climates and cultures.A conclusion is summanzed based on above paradigm reseach: the advanceagesand experience of the Chinese traditional villages will be used for reference in thecreations of modern human settlements, including of site planning, layout andresidential houses.
