The total amount of housing has been growing by several or even tens of times in recent 20 yearsin China, most of which are municipal housing. However, the theories of Chinese modern housinghave been developed slowly, which is inconsistent with the rapid construction of multi-unitresidences. With development of society and improvement of productivity, living standard hasbeen improved, and people are more concerned with dwelling quality. People will not only contentwith the improvement of room size, reasonableness of housing type, physical environment (suchas sound, light, heat and air), and external resident environment, but pursue higher livinglevel-genuine poetic residences. Culture is the soul of housing architecture and thus traditionalfolk houses' culture should be succeed and developed. The major research methods of this dissertation are compare and contrast. Firstly, this paper is tofind out intrinsic and phenomenal similarities and differences between traditional residences andmulti-unit residences through comparing and analyzing forming and development as well ascurrent situation. Secondly, this paper will compare and analyze traditional residences andmulti-unit residences from a cultural angle. Characteristics of culture are material, systemic andspiritual which respectively correspond with relationship between human being and nature (worldview of nature), relationship between people (world view of humanism), and self perception(world view of psychology). Therefore, the part of analyzing questions compares and analyzesarchitectural elements involved in traditional folk houses and municipal housing from threeaspects such as world view of humanism, nature and psychology, which aims to seek a commonground between modern municipal housing and aspects of cultural recessiveness such ashumanism spirits involved in traditional residences. Then, this dissertation will put forward thedesign method concerning application of traditional folk houses' elements to modern housing, andthen try to change current drawbacks of municipal housing such as lack of expression and neglectof sensation, so that it is possible to explore another development path for people's betterinhabitancy as well as to provide a new way of thought for forming resident architecture theorywith Chinese characteristic. This dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces background information of thestudy, research meaning, choice of research objectives, definition of research category, relevantstudy situation at home and abroad, and methods and framework adopted by this dissertation.Chapter 2, with retrospection firstly, vertically analyses the development of Chinese traditionalresidence and modern municipal housing as well as analyses the influences of historical cultureand social situation on the both residences. Secondly, the current situation and characteristics ofboth are specified with the aid of field research. Chapter 3 analyses the impacts of culture onresident architecture, and then compares and analyses the elements of traditional folk houses andthat of modern municipal housing from such three aspects as world view of humanism, nature andpsychology. Chapter 4 abstracts relevant elements of adaptation of traditional residences tomodern housing. This chapter also analyses four examples related to the application of traditionalfolk houses' elements to municipal housing. Finally this chapter puts forward design methods ofthis application. Chapter 5 generalizes the previous four chapters and looks forward application oftraditional folk houses' elements to modern municipal housing. The paper is conducted in the sequence of raising research questions, analyzing the questions and solving the questions.
