The paper briefly introduces the status quo of distribution automation both athome and abroad, and emphatically analyzes the gap between China and otheradvanced countries in the field of distribution automation technology. It alsomakes a detailed analysis of the difficulties in the execution of distributionautomation technology. In addition, the current management process of electric power dispatching, the equipment management mode and the routine operation of key equipment aredescribed in details in the system demand analysis; and the existing problems aredescribed in details on the basis of the analysis on equipment operation. On the basis of the above-mentioned technological research, SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system is designed and plays animportant role in the distribution automation system. It consists of three parts, i.e.terminal system, communication system and supervisory control center.Regarding the communication system, a contrast analysis has been made in thepaper between several main communication technologies currently applied, through which it determines to apply the communication technology—GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) in the system, and a model of SCADA networktopological structure is given based on GPRS radio communication technology.Besides, prototype development has been conducted on server software by meansof socket programming on the basis of the established model of SCADA networktopological structure. Finally, the paper gives a brief conclusion and puts forward many issues inthe system to be improved and studied in depth, e.g. research and development ofterminal equipment, and further optimization of client software and serversoftware. The result of the study demonstrates that the automatic supervisory control system for power grid based on GPRS radio communication technology hasimportance significance both in theory and in practice.
