The purpose of management technique for automation industry field device is to manage field device flexibly, find exception of device and system timely, and reduce the rate of accident. It can save the time to check multifunction so that guarantee the system running safely. Many automation corporations have developed device management software because of the need of market. These software are mainly aimed at the field bus protocols that are popular now. There is no software is used for EPA especially.This paper introduces the function characteristics of the current device management software and analyzes the technique to solve the problem of inter-operation. The technique of XDDL is analyzed and the device description technique based on XML is brought up with others. The architecture of the device management software is designed based on the experience of the current industry field device management. The software is written by JAVA in the platform of Windows. The functions of the software includes monitoring real time data, the configuration of management parameters, the diagnosis the IP conflict, the alarm of device dead, the alarm of project exception and the export of failure tables. The technique of multi-thread and the array of communication units are used to separate the operations of read and write. The process of communication is effective and accurate. Using the technique of parsing XML based on JDOM to make the management of project file and device description file effective. The array of devices, the monitoring thread of device announcement and the monitoring thread of exception are built to manage the field devices effectively. The function of failures table which is written in the form of Excel is implemented by using Jakarta POL The graphic user interface is implemented by using Swing and the model of real time data monitoring, the model of configuration management parameters and the model of accident report are implemented.The main functions of the software is analyzed and tested. The results prove that the software can monitor, configure and diagnose the EPA device in a unified system effectively. The architecture of the software is clear and sensible, and the foundation of the software has been built for the next development. The device description file for PEC7000 is written.
