| With the development of urbanization, pollution of ground water runoff has become serious and resulted in an increasingly global environmental crisis. Ill-conceived artificial construction is one of the most important reasons. Recent years see a real estate boom throughout China where "the residential house with water scene" becomes a popular style. Unfortunately, poor control of water level and pollution is a common problem in these residential areas which not only waste urban water resource but also destroy the eco-environment around. With "Creating an eco-friendly society" as the talk of the town, how to build a sustainable waterscape has become an urgent task. It is also the main topic of this thesis.Firstly, through research on the evolution of waterscape in Eastern and Western cultural contexts, one principle should be confirmed that waterscape undertakes different functions with different social demands and consequently has created different waterscape styles. When we are reconsidering the relationship between human and nature, it is a prevailing trend to fully tap the potentials of ecological and environmental values. After a brief research of the "The residential house with water scene" in Shanghai, "Fish tank" will be an appropriate word to describe the reality: refreshing the water regularly, uncontrollable water quality, and abominable environment, which have become the choke point for further expansion of "The residential house with water scene". Under the surface, three reasons are identified: designers' ignorance in maintenance; clients' shortsighted view on benefits; and policymakers' disregard of rules. In the final analysis, it is the result of pursuit and demonstration for showcasing in waterscape.Water resources management in China is far from desirable. An effective practice is called for to address problems in water resources management in "The residential house with water scene" throughout the country. So, the point of thesis is to use waterscape design as a way of surface-water management based on the practice of residential waterscape design in Germany in order to realize sustainability of waterscape. The method implies three meanings: Firstly, use waterscape as a water controller of the district; secondly, grow wet land plantings to be water cleaner; finally, construct infiltrative structure to pull back underground water. Moreover, the key to this method is to a fundamental shift in values, ethics and esthetics from WATER FEATURE to WATER NATURE.Waterscape design and surface-water management need design guidance and construction details. From this perspective, the thesis proposes suggestions on three levels: firstly, collecting rain-water and keeping balance of water resources; secondly, using wet land and maintaining diversity of species; finally, the BMPs and surface-water managements. In conclusion, to make waterscape maintenance and management more feasible, the thesis discusses an assessment system on waterscape in residential areas which is oriented towards runoff management and its basic framework, and put forward suggestions on construction management and operational mechanism. |
