Medical model transformation pointed out a new direction for hospital architectural design—to create fine and patient-centered medical service environment. Medical technique develops rapidly and medical method renovates day by day, which demand for flexible reactions on the part of hospital buildings. Modular hospital design emerged under such circumstances. This kind of hospitals enjoys low-rise courtyard-type medical environment, level elastic growth mode, standardized modules and flexible connections. Therefore, it represents a new hospital design idea which is in conformity with requirements of the times.Method of systematic analysis is a scientific methodology to analyze complicated substances and explore internal connections and laws. Classification of the hospitals helps to get clearer and deeper understanding of the needs and features of hospital design. The author tentatively classified hospital building modules into three classes-"element-like module" "groupware-like module" and "component-like module"-- based on theories of hospital systematical classification and on the intrinsic features of module hospitals. After case analysis of many module hospitals, the author did classification research on the three-class hospital building modules. Firstly, using the graphics of human body size and medical instrument size, the author came up with the standardized plane of "element-like module"; then different combinations of "groupware-like module" were deducted focusing on specific medical behaviors. At last, the author analyzed and compared several cases, and explored the form and layout features of "component-like module". Through comprehensive studies on hospital modules, the features of module hospital were disclosed at last. The author hopes that through classification studies on module hospital buildings, this western design idea could be spread and studied in China, and hopes that the research could serve as reference for future module hospital design in China.
