In recent years, with the development of the technology, architecture is no longer a independent subject but amalgamating many subjects such as mechanism and physics. Therefore, the forms of buildings are becoming rich and colorful which is changing the traditional design concept and the adaptable structure is emerging as the times require. So far as we know, the adaptable structure will no longer keep the invariable topological relation but can change its shape and alter the force transfer path with the load increasing. Herein, the passive adaptable structure is carried out in this thesis.Firstly, the bistable and transformable characteristics of the flat-buckling beam are studied adopting the cusp catastrophe theory which is an analytical solution and the large software ANSYS carrying though the numerical analysis to gain the feasibility. As the feasibility is gained ,an adaptable structure element is developed which consists of the flat-buckling beam,spring-damp element and steel pole.Secondly, the finite elements model of the adaptable structure element is established and meanwhile the analysis including the stability and disadvantage is carried on while the flat-buckling beam taking on different rise-to-span ratios. As the analysis results indicate that the increase of rise-to-span ratio of flat-buckling beam can enhance the critical load capability of the adaptable structure element a little while the introduction of disadvantage will reduce the critical load capability but it can make the flexure path more stable than the ideal condition which is advantageous to the structure. At the same time, the mechanism which the adaptable structure element carry the load is also studied and the reason that the shape of the adaptable structure element is variable is that the flat-buckling beam has a effective combination between the bending elasticity and the axis rigidity.In addition, though introducing the spring-damp element whose rigidity is variable, the influence to the whole adaptable structure element is studied. And the result indicates that the adaptable structure element can gain many balance states which have different loading capability and are able to satisfy different displacement limitations.Finally, he conclusions drawn form this study are summarized and meanwhile some research work should be improved, and areas needing research are highlighted.
