To identify the sources of power quality disturbances is a relatively critical demand of power monitoring and control. It has great significance on changing the relationship between the customers and utilities and improving power quality. At present the research on identification of harmonic sources, voltage sags and so on has just begun, no efficient method is proposed. Until now no instrument can be used for field test.A new method based on load impedance characteristics for identifying harmonic sources in distribution systems is proposed. The identifying method is based on the point of common coupling's voltage waveform and current waveform, and the load parameters value. A degree of non-linearity is introduced to evaluate the contribution of the harmonics. And an empirical threshold value ofμfrom considerable tests is also introduced that can be easily applied to practical field use. A harmonic source monitor based on the method is made. The suggested method is validated through the Real Time Digital Power System Simulator (RTDS) test and actual on-site test measurements on the 110kV/35kV XiLin Electricity Distribution system located in the ShanXi Province...
