With the development of subway in our country, running speed and transport density of train are ascending, thus the manual operation mode can't meet the practical demand. Researchers focus on using computer control to make train driving safely, riding cozily, on schedule, operating economically and parking accurately. The technology of automatic train operation (called ATO for short in the following) integrates advanced computer, communication, control and signal technology, and artificial intelligence theory into an automatic control system where train can be speeded up and down to run automatically. The solutions can not only assure of train and the comfort of passengers, but also increase train's speed and save energy. It's certain that ATO will replace man operation in the near future.Train operation is a typical, complex, multi-objective, and nonlinear system, so it is difficult to find out the exact mathematics mode and its optimum solution. It is quite too difficult to obtain a satisfying effect of ATO using general arithmetic. Fuzzy predictive control is a new control algorithm based on fuzzy logic and predictive control, which more accords with human control idea and has less demand for controlled procedure mode, thus the method can meet high quality of control demand from train operation. Fuzzy predictive control theory have great potential in solving control problems of complex system that is one novel intelligent control methodology.Firstly, we introduced the basic structure and functions of Automatic Train Control System (ATC), especially the relationship between ATO and other member system. Secondly, The theory of the fuzzy logic and predictive control were introduced and the combinations of the fuzzy and predictive control were expounded. Based on studying status of ATO, fuzzy prediction control and automatic control algorithm, the application and simulation of fuzzy prediction control to ATO were further studied in the paper. We designed the speed control mathematic on the basis of fuzzy control theory and predictive control theory. In order to have a contrast, we also designed the speed control by PID. Using MATLAB, we simulate the speed control mathematic based on the kinetic model, and get the simulated curve under various environments. By contrast, it proved that it have a much better effect by fuzzy predictive control then PID control.The application of fuzzy predictive control to ATO system not only enriches the theory of fuzzy predictive control, but also offers a new method for train operation with high quality. The result of related simulation shows that the application of fuzzypredictive control to ATO can assure the train to run in high quality way. The studymakes a good foundation to future ATO research and means a lot to realize fullfunctional ATO in our country.
